Connect an assistant
SpriteGrid has an MCP server. An AI assistant connected to it can look at the documents you have open, see the art, draw, arrange layers, animate, set up slices and export, while you watch. Every change it makes is one step in your undo history, labeled "AI: ...".
Claude Code, Claude Desktop and Codex#
Open Help ▸ AI Assistants and click Set up next to the app. SpriteGrid adds itself to that app's MCP settings, keeps the rest of the file as it was, and leaves a .bak copy beside it. Then start a new session in the app (quit and restart Claude Desktop).
Remove in the same place takes it out again.
Any other MCP app#
SpriteGrid comes with a small program, SpriteGrid.Mcp, that an app starts to reach it over stdio. Add it to the app's MCP settings as a server named spritegrid:
{
"mcpServers": {
"spritegrid": {
"command": "C:\\Users\\you\\AppData\\Local\\SpriteGrid\\current\\SpriteGrid.Mcp.exe",
"args": []
}
}
}- Windows:
%LocalAppData%\SpriteGrid\current\SpriteGrid.Mcp.exe - Mac:
/Applications/SpriteGrid.app/Contents/MacOS/SpriteGrid.Mcp
Help ▸ AI Assistants shows this with your own path, ready to copy. The path stays the same when SpriteGrid updates. If SpriteGrid isn't running when the assistant needs it, SpriteGrid.Mcp starts it.
Then ask#
Ask for what you'd ask a person: "Make a 32×32 sword icon on a new layer", "Put a one-pixel outline on the knight", "Make this a four-frame idle loop". The assistant finds its way with get_status and describe_document, and checks its work with render_preview.
You stay in charge#
- It waits for you. While you're drawing or dragging, a change waits until you're done. While a dialog is open, changes are refused until you close it.
- You see what it's working on. Its document is locked to it: the tab shows a robot and the canvas names the assistant. You can still look, play, save and export.
- Take Over. The banner on its canvas has a Take Over button: the document is yours again at once, and that assistant can't change it again.
- Undo works. Edit ▸ Undo takes back any of its steps. Its own
undostops at your steps, unless told not to. - Two guards. Replacing a file needs the assistant to say
overwrite: true; closing a document with unsaved changes needsdiscardChanges: true. - Turning it off. Edit ▸ General Settings ▸ AI Assistants, or the switch at the top of Help ▸ AI Assistants. It's on until you turn it off.
Only programs running as you, on your computer, can connect.
