How to use SpriteGrid
3D models
A 3D layer draws a model in pixels, with pixel-art shading and outlines, and animates it on the timeline. Turn a model into sprites from any angle.
Importing a model#
Layer ▸ Import 3D Model... takes OBJ, FBX, glTF and GLB files. You can also drop a model on the window. The model is framed, the 3D tool (K) is picked, and the 3D Layer panel opens.
With the 3D tool, choose Model, Camera or Light in the tool options, then drag on the canvas to move, turn or scale the model, orbit the camera, or aim the light.
The 3D Layer panel#
- Model: position, rotation and size, and the Materials. Give each material a color and a style: Smooth, Shiny, Toon, Dithered Toon, Dithered or Flat, with its steps, shine and shadows. Lines draws outlines between materials and where parts overlap.
- Animation: a rigged model's animations. + puts one on the timeline as a block you can drag, trim and loop.
- Light: where the light comes from, its colors, and a rim light.
- Camera: perspective or orthographic, and framing.
- Render: a transparent background, pixel snapping, and cleaning up stray pixels.
Everything that has a value can be keyed on the timeline, with the 3D Transform and 3D Camera tracks.
Right-click the layer and choose Flatten to Frames to turn the animation into a drawing on each frame, to touch up by hand.
Painting on a model#
View ▸ 3D Preview shows a model that wears your document as its texture. With its Paint button on, draw on the model and the strokes land in the texture. View ▸ UV Overlay shows where the model's faces fall on the canvas.
